In summary
For the past t3 years, our team at Consumer Rights CIC has been working closely with residents of Dundee and the surrounding areas to help them cut energy costs while contributing to the UK’s carbon reduction goals.
With funding available through ECO4 (backed by LA Flex) and The Great British Insulation Scheme, we remain dedicated to ensuring that qualifying households in Dundee receive the support they are entitled to.
So how and why do we do this?
ECO4 and similar grants have been introduced to help the UK Government reach its Net Zero Emission target. At Consumer Rights, we are dedicated to playing our part.
In Dundee, the average Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating for homes is around 64.2, which falls into band D. This is slightly above the average for England and Wales. For private rental properties in Dundee, it is mandatory to have an energy efficiency rating of at least band E on the EPC Register. Properties rated F or G cannot legally be rented out unless they meet specific exemption criteria.
Consumer Rights has been actively helping the residents of Dundee and surrounding areas improve their EPC ratings by accessing these government-backed schemes, such as ECO4, as well as The Great British Installation Scheme.
Why are these schemes essential in Dundee?
Dundee has a mix of housing types, including a significant number of older properties. Many of these homes were built before modern energy efficiency standards:
- Pre-1919 homes: Dundee has a variety of Victorian and Edwardian terraced houses that typically suffer from poor insulation and are less energy-efficient.
EPC Ratings for Dundee
- C and above (good energy efficiency): Approximately a quarter to a third of homes in Dundee are estimated to have an EPC rating of C or higher. These properties are considered energy-efficient but may still benefit from upgrades like modern heating systems or solar panels.
- D (average efficiency): The most common EPC rating in Dundee is D. These properties are generally older homes with standard insulation and heating systems but could achieve better energy efficiency with improvements.
- E (poor efficiency): A small number of properties in Dundee have an E rating, meaning they have poor energy efficiency and likely face higher energy bills. Many of these homes are pre-1919 terraced houses with solid walls and outdated heating systems.
- F-G (very poor efficiency): Homes with an F or G rating represent the least common but indicate very poor energy efficiency. These properties require substantial upgrades to meet modern standards.
To qualify for government funding, a property must have an EPC rating of D or lower, meaning many homes in Dundee already meet the first eligibility requirement.
Energy Efficiency Challenges in Dundee
Dundee, like many other areas, has a higher proportion of lower-income households, making energy costs a heavy burden for many families. According to recent statistics from Dundee City Council, a significant number of residents are living in fuel poverty.
