Free Loft / Cavity Wall Insulation
Faulty or poorly installed cavity wall insulation and loft insulation are worth up to £1,100 and can knock £480/year off your energy bills. Energy firms are offering it for free, as long as you own your home and meet their eligibility criteria.
Most homes built between 1920 and 1990 have a gap between the internal and external walls. Filling the cavity with insulation materials means that cold air is kept out, and warm air stays in – but it’s not suitable for everyone.
Up to a quarter of your home’s heat escapes through the roof, but you can limit this by laying mineral wool under the rafters.
The ECO scheme legally requires the main energy suppliers to install energy efficient technologies such as cavity wall insulation and loft insulation to domestic households in the UK. If the energy suppliers fall short of their obligations they receive hefty fines. Some energy providers are lowering the criteria for eligibility as they struggle to meet the targets. This means that most householders are now able to obtain free insulation measures.
